Instant Cure for "One of Those Days"

Instant Cure for "One of Those Days"
Ducky is down in the doldrums. Image of a stuffed duck splayed out on his belly, looking glum.

You don't have to look or sound like Sesame Street's Grouch to be feeling "off." You might even be trying to pull off your normal upbeat mood, but your energy isn't the same. In those moments, do you find yourself throwing in the towel for the day? Don't do it! Do this instead...

You know what I'm talking about.

Things aren't going quite right.

In fact. They're off. You might be saying to yourself and others, "I got up on the wrong side of bed today," or " I'm having one of those days."

There's a catchy song by Five Finger Death Punch called "A Little Bit Off Today" that likely captures this feeling.

😒
I'm a little bit off today, something down inside me's different
Woke up a little off today, I could tell that something's wrong
I'm a little thrown off today, there's something going on inside me
I'm a little bit off today, a little bit off today...
Five Finger Death Punch

The song goes on to say "Ain't nothing you can do about it," and while it FEELS true, it is NOT TRUE.

Unfortunately, this very singable song can reinforce our stuckness. But you CAN do something about it.

STOP THE MADNESS!

What do you want?

There's a saying that says you get to keep everything you argue for. If you're looking for the company that loves misery, you can keep your self- defeating thoughts. You do feel defeated in those moments, don't you? I know I do.

It isn't just misery that loves company, though, despite the popular maxim. Joy loves company too. Passion loves company too.

Birds of a Feather

What Birds Do You Fly With?

Misery, Joy, Passion: all just birds that love their own flocks.

💡
Birds of a feather, flock together.
~Unknown

Birds of a feather isn't just in reference to people. It isn't just that nerds hang around with nerds or millionaires with millionaires. It's more than personality types; it's also about mindset, and anything else "sticky."

Like attracts like.

You get to choose your flightpath, your own flight crew. Which flock do you want to fly with?

Changing trains

Another tack. Another track

To switch metaphors, you can stay on that track, on that train of thought and ride it out, in (and with) misery.

Or you can jump tracks and change the day's outlook practically immediately. There is absolutely no need to lose an entire day because something went awry.

"It is absolutely critical," says Steve D. Sims in his book Bluefishing, "when you feel like that, that you learn how to break away from that negative place and go do something you’re passionate about. Even just for twenty minutes."

He should know. He's a professional concierge and it's his business to be passionate about passion! His business model is to deliver "experiences" aligned with people's passions.

Twenty minutes?? I'd say even five or ten minutes. Start small. We don't all have 20 minutes to spare. The reality is that we'll lose much more than five or ten or twenty minutes if we stay in a funk, but they slip away unnoticed.

A Solution

Do the Opposite

Sims goes on to say "Do the opposite of the negative. Do something pure fun. Do that, then come back to the work at hand. Those same obstacles you thought were guillotines just an hour ago, guess what? You can’t even recognize them anymore. They’re no longer hurdles for you; they’re not even speed bumps."

💡
"You go straight through them because passion gives you a turbocharge to get through those obstacles. You don’t perceive obstacles when you’re in this zone."
Steve D. Sims, Bluefishing

You've probably heard that there's value in stepping away from a project when you're frustrated, and that goes for whether the project is the source of your frustration or something entirely different.

What gets you PUMPED UP? What project or activity lights you up inside? Go do that for a few minutes. Light yourself on fire. Then come back to your work at hand.

Little known secret: Visualization and imagination can work too, especially in a pinch. I do this with clients all the time. I guide them into an imaginative experience in their mind and their energy shifts right "behind" their eyes!

Actively Pursuing a Mindshift

You need a mindshift.

Stepping away is valuable - taking a walk, taking a nap - but it's potentially even better to actively and intentionally engage in something you're passionate about, to re-energize before you go back to your project, back to your day.

It goes without saying that there's a place for walks, naps, and meditation. But, we often fail to consider the flipside of energy generation, the power of intentionally "plugging in" to a higher energy to fuel our positive mindset and inspiration.

It's one thing to fill up. It's quite another to overflow!!

You get to overflow by engaging in an area of your passions. Then you can watch the energy spill over.

Try it! I Dare You

Disrupt your default mode

It's easy to slide into the doldrums. Default mode. Habit.

I'm not judging. I've been there. I'm still working on my own self- defeating tendencies. It's an ongoing practice, not one and done.

I did this. Just the other day, in fact.

What did I do? I focused my attention to my website, where I express my passion online and the work re-energized me. Working with a new theme and the back-end organization gave me a sense of control and inspired me in new ways to showcase my passion, which is teaching, motivating and inspiring people through coaching, workshops and keynotes.

What does that look like on the front end? Where it counts??

It's Possible!

In less than FIVE days,

🎉I updated my website theme as mentioned above, organized the navigation and layout, added a Table of Content to posts and pages, and added a testimonial feature to my homepage, along with a logo feature of the businesses I am currently supporting.
🎉I've increased my newsletter subscriber rate by well over 300%, by getting excited about the changes and personally asking people to subscribe! (Self-promotion has been challenging for me, but getting excited about my mission helps.)
🎉I have published 5 posts including this one, created a template for my new weekly Newsletter, the first one to publish tomorrow March 5th, 2026! (That doesn't include the other 3 drafts in the works.)
🎉I've held two collaboration meetings over Zoom and scheduled two more this week in person!
🎉I've had 3 brilliant coaching conversations with 2 more to go this week.

That's not even counting the dozen personalized follow-up cards ready to go in the snail mail, the podcast episodes recorded and edited, the homework I've done for my Creativity Coaching course and my Self-Actualization Coaching course!

AND that includes down-time with my hubby AND a solid 8 hours of sleep at night. 💥BOOM!

OK. I am tooting my own horn a bit, but ain't nobody gonna toot it for me unless I toot it first!! Same goes for you. Besides, if I can do it, so can you, in your way, for your passion projects.

It works. Get passionate. Get excited. It worked for me! I found myself in flow and I got a lot accomplished. And I was inspired with quite a few new ideas as well.

I dare you to try it!
