The Blue Flame Discovery Process

Like snowflakes and fingerprints. No two Blue Flames are alike. No one can tell you what your Blue Flame is. You must discover it for yourself.

You Must Discover Your Own

The discovery exercise below is merely a jumping off point. Blue Flame Discovery takes time. You will likely have multiple expressions of your Blue Flame depending on time of life and circumstance. You may find that once upon a time, you lived your Blue Flame and then something happened that disconnected you. I invite you to see what has changed.

Reconnecting with your Blue Flame is like IS reestablishing a relationship with yourself, before you end up divorcing yourself. It’s going to take some date nights, long walks or drives, dreaming, maybe flowers and wine. Who knows? Only you!

Here are 8 areas to explore to remember your Spark. Spend 3 minutes with each prompt and journal your responses. I am a firm believer in handwriting, especially for soul-filled writing, but go digital or voice record if you must.

In less than 30 minutes, you’ll have begun to chart your life map in ways you might never have thought to do before.

The 8 Areas of Blue Flame Exploration

1.        What makes you feel ALIVE?
Small or large? What makes you breathe deeply with gratitude for your life?

2.        What did you love as a child?
The classic purpose question! Yes, our likes, loves, and hobbies can change, but there’s a deeper essence here that is at first glance unseen.

 3.        How do you help others?
Think love language. What do people come to you for? Where and what do you offer naturally?

 4.        What do you love to do that others hate?
This is how niches are created. Thank goodness we don’t all like to do the same things. Your gifts are also hidden here, even though you might feel slighted when a friend tells you she could NEVER do THAT. It’s actually a compliment.

 5.        Who do you admire? Why?
Do you have any heroes and sheroes? What traits and characteristics do you admire about them? It may be that your Blue Flame is calling you to embody those traits.

 6.        Who do you envy? Why?
What does Jenny have that you want? What does Phil have that would satisfy you? Is it material? Is it a talent? You don’t REALLY want what they have; you want what you want that would give you a core feeling in your life.

7.        What do you harp on yourself for?
What do you consider negative about yourself? How might it be positive if embraced? You may find that it is a key that unlocks your authenticity, despite what the world says about it! SOMEONE NEEDS IT, first and foremost YOU!

8.        What is your wound?
How have you been hurt? You’re only a true victim once, but you can victimize yourself OR you can become a HERO for yourself and for others. Your wound just might be part of your calling to heal, and to help others overcome the same challenges you have.

1-7 are adapted from Jennifer Fulwiler’s book Your Blue Flame. # 8 is my addition, though I later found it in Robert Holden's book Higher Purpose.

Wash, Rinse, Repeat

Repeat this exercise once a week for a month without peeking at how you answered the week before. You can review them at any time, after all you are courting yourself, just don’t read them the day of each subsequent journaling session, at least not until AFTER you’ve journaled that session.

Stay open to synchronicities and opportunities that show up that will allow you to experiment with potential Blue Flame activities. We don't want Blue Flame in theory, but in meaningful practice.
